Run W.O.B.B.L.E. before starting, then confirm cooling water at the exhaust the moment she fires.
W — Water
- Raw-water sea strainer clear of weed/debris
- Fresh-water (coolant) header tank at level
O — Oil
- Engine oil on the dipstick at level
- Oil the right colour — not milky (milky = water ingress)
B — Belts
- Alternator & water-pump belts correctly tensioned
- No fraying, cracking or black dust
B — Bilge
- Bilge under the engine dry — no water or oil leaks
L — Levels
- Gearbox oil
- Fresh-water coolant
- Stern-gland greaser (if fitted)
E — Engine / Exhaust
- Visual: no loose wires, fuel or oil weeps
- After starting: a good flow of cooling water at the exhaust
