Engine checks — W.O.B.B.L.E.

Run W.O.B.B.L.E. before starting, then confirm cooling water at the exhaust the moment she fires.

W — Water

  • Raw-water sea strainer clear of weed/debris
  • Fresh-water (coolant) header tank at level

O — Oil

  • Engine oil on the dipstick at level
  • Oil the right colour — not milky (milky = water ingress)

B — Belts

  • Alternator & water-pump belts correctly tensioned
  • No fraying, cracking or black dust

B — Bilge

  • Bilge under the engine dry — no water or oil leaks

L — Levels

  • Gearbox oil
  • Fresh-water coolant
  • Stern-gland greaser (if fitted)

E — Engine / Exhaust

  • Visual: no loose wires, fuel or oil weeps
  • After starting: a good flow of cooling water at the exhaust
